|
The Two Fully manned Regular Battalions have been
very busy. The 1st
Battalion have now finished conducting operations in Kosovo and have had an excellent tour as seen on Meridian TV and in the local papers. The 2nd Battalion have completed their move to Tern Hill, Shropshire and are helping to cover the fireman's strike. The 3rd Battalion (Territorial) have had an excellent exercise in the USA and have held a thrilling Patrol competition which also involved some of the PWRR Cadet Forces. |

The Regiment is a glowing example to all others of how to conduct business.
We are a family and support each other, be it a regular soldier, TA

HISTORY
FORMATION
The Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment is the senior English infantry regiment of The Line. It was formed on 9th September 1992 by the amalgamation of the Queen's Regiment and The Royal Hampshire Regiment. It is the Infantry County Regiment of London, Surrey, Kent, Sussex, Hampshire, Middlesex, Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
The Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment can trace its history back to 1572 when Queen Elizabeth I reviewed the Trained Bands of London, from which the 3rd of Foot descended. The Regiment's precedence in the British Army dates from the raising of the 2nd of Foot in 1661 for the defence of Tangier acquired by King Charles II on his marriage to Princess Catherine of Braganza. The nickname "The Tigers" comes from the 67th Foot (South Hampshire Regiment). Having served 21 years unbroken service in India, under active service conditions, King George IV authorised the Tiger sleeve badge in 1826.
FIGHTING RECORD
The forebear regiments of The Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment fought in nearly all the major campaigns and wars in which the British Army was engaged. They won no less than 56 Victoria Crosses, an outstanding record, and were awarded over 550 Battle Honours including the oldest on any Colour: 'Tangier 1662-80'
REGIMENTAL BADGE
The Regimental Badge is a composition of the badges of the forebear regiments. The Dragon was awarded to The Buffs, in recognition of their Tudor origin, by Queen Anne, probably in 1707. It was a rare distinction for a Regiment to be honoured like this in those days, and is one of the earliest known Regimental Badges. Below the Tudor Dragon is The Hampshire Rose as worn by the Trained Bands of Hampshire, who fought so gallantly for King Henry V at Agincourt in 1415.
The surrounding device inscribed with the motto: 'Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense' (Shame on him who thinks ill of it)
is a garter, as awarded to the Knights of the Order of the Garter. This is England's oldest Order of Chivalry, founded by King Edward III in 1348. The garter is taken from the badge of the Royal Sussex Regiment and the Officers' badge of The Royal Hampshire Regiment. The feathers above the Tudor Dragon are the ostrich plumes worn by The Black Prince at the Battle of Crecy in 1346. The 15th Prince of Wales considered the East Middlesex Regiment to be deserving of his plumes for its exploits in India. The award was given the King's approval in 1810 and was subsequently included in the badge of the Middlesex Regiment.
CORPS OF DRUMS
2nd Battalion The Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment
The Second Battalion the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment was formed on the 9th September 1992 from two regiments; The Queen's Regiment and the Royal Hampshire Regiment. In this short time, the Battalion's Corps of Drums has established a reputation throughout the British Army.
The Platoon has seen service world-wide including Poland, Canada, Kenya,
Belgium and recently Botswana. The Corps of Drums has also completed many
tours of active service in Northern Ireland.
The last three years has seen the Platoon grow into one of the finest Corps
of Drums in the British Army under the leadership of Drum Major Dave Lear
MBE. He was awarded the MBE for his outstanding service to the Corps of Drums.
In 1998 the Corps of Drums was invited to Poland for a two-week tour. This
was excellent, as not only did the Platoon participate in some high profile
ceremonial duties, but also managed to see some of the country and to meet
soldiers from the Polish Army.
The last tour of Northern Ireland was quite interesting in that the Platoon had the honour to perform ceremonial duties in cities such as Belfast.
In June 1999 the Regiment had the great privilege of conducting public duties
at Buckingham Palace. The Corps of Drums had the honour of marching the Old
Guard from St James's Court to Buckingham Palace. This was very enjoyable
and a great privilege. Marching down the Mall to Buckingham Palace was unlike
any experience that the Platoon and participated in. In addition a few drummers
had the great honour to take part in the seven hundred year old Ceremony of
the Keys at the Tower of London. While the Platoon was in London the Corps
of Drums also took part in the last Royal Tournament. This was a one-night
event and took the form of a massed Corps of Drums. This was formed from most
of the Corps of Drums from the British Army and members of the Drums Society.
At the Royal Tournament Cpl Matt Foy was presented The Director of Infantry
Cutler's Sword 1999. This is an Army wide competition to find the best drummer.
In October the Corps of Drums will deploy with the Battalion on a six-month
operational tour of Bosnia as part of the multi-national NATO peacekeeping
force.
